Rainy days bring all kinds of bad health and some of the first to fall victim to coughs, fever, and colds are little children. And although minor maladies can be cured by home nursing and loads of love, keeping a sick child happy and occupied may present challenges. Their capacity for patience is not that long and anxiety over his illness can make him unreasonable and weepy. So when your child is afflicted by contagious diseases like mumps and chicken pox that need plenty of bedrest, keep these easy ideas in mind to keep your out-of-sorts tyke amused and on the road to good health and recovery!
1. Engage him in a storytelling session. This is the perfect time to catch up on the quality time that you’ve longed for with your child. Bring out the storybooks and read together. Don’t just ramble through the words, but hone your acting skills and make the characters come alive with some real expressive action. Better yet, ask him to be one of the characters and without overexerting himself, let him belt out some of the character’s lines.
2. Make scrapbooks. Now you know why you’ve been saving up those old magazines. They do wonders for scrapbooks of any topic under the sun. Use discarded computer sheets, staple them together with yarn or string and make a scrapbook. Suggest some topics to get him started– “food around the world,” “things you find in the supermarket,” or “paper doll fashions” are some interesting options. Supply a pair of scissors, glue and colored paper to ‘ borders. Then cover each scrapbook nicely with plastic. This activity can keep him amused for days. The prize treat of chocolate bars after each completed project will give him something delectable to look forward to.
3. Ask him to write letters. Don’t allow your child to slide into the doldrums. Instead, ask him to convey to friends and relatives what he feels through letters. Tell him to list all the projects that he’s been able to accomplish inspire of being sick. Realizing that he has been useful even at his sick bed will keep his spirits up.
4. Stock up on his favorite video tapes. This is your child’s chance to watch his favorite TV shows and kiddie movies till he drops! Indulge him with the movies such as Casper or Batman. Top off the viewing sessions with a hefty helping of his favorite treat.
5. Make a box of “magic wishes.” Decorate an old box to resemble a treasure chest and load it with small surprises– a new storybook, jigsaw puzzles, coloring books, paper dolls or a packet of crayons. Give him something to look forward to by keeping the treasure chest hidden away and revealing the goodies inside as a reward for good behavior or a well-executed project.
Nothing draws more sympathy than an ailing child. Cuddle your child and show him how much you care with these entertaining tips. Most of these require parental or sibling participation so the sick child feels the reassuring warmth of his family. And while medicines and technology deal scientifically with disease, your love and caring will ultimately provide the healing touch.
